Professor Hugh McGavock warned that thousands of people could die from treatable diseases as the effects of the drugs are reduced. Bacteria over many generations gradually become resistant to antibiotics. But because GPs are prescribing drugs more frequently for less serious illnesses, they are being exposed to the drugs more often and so are becoming resistant faster.
