New Zealand scientists have been given approval to drill up to two kilometres under Antarctica to study changes in the continent's ice sheet...

NZ Scientists to bore Antarctic Ice

(October 2003)

A five-year $33 million project will compare core samples from periods when the Earth's climate was warmer than today in an attempt to improve predictions on future ice sheet behaviour.

Drilling is scheduled to begin on Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf in 2004 or 2005.

The project will be funded by Britain, Germany, Italy, New Zealand and the United States and will be co-ordinated by Gary Wilson of New Zealand's Otago University...
