Black Jaguar could be on the Prowl in Canterbury

A truck driver said he saw a big black cat on Friday morning on the Mayfield property of Blair and Sarah Gallagher, alarming the Ashburton district.

"Stories come up like this all the time and it's never actually come to anything," Adelaide Zoo mammal keeper Peter Whitehead said.

Mr Whitehead, who is in charge of the Adelaide Zoo's two leopards, was sceptical about the sighting.

"It would be unusual, but that's not to say it is impossible," he said.

Leopards were adaptable creatures and he had no doubts one could survive in the wild, up to the age of 15 or 16 years...
